This was his escape. Brashness, sloppy clothes. So purely American. Somehow when he was with him, England could forget all of the problems of the world. The song of the desert is the wind. It is the sand. It is the sun. It is the soft hiss of dust in the night as the breeze plays with it like a small child. The silence of a lazy afternoon, when it is too hot to move. It is the cry of an eagle, soaring above. It is the sky, so blue it makes tears well up in clear eyes, painful because of its brightness. It is the stars, so brilliant and infinite you can't breathe. It is the dusty path trailing through the endless velvet heavens, so vast it swallows you whole, you wondering how long it will take to make that imminent fateful journey. It is the distant mesas, inky black against the red sun.
